WordPress Design: Themes

WordPress designs are saved separately from the content as theme files. Any basic WordPress installation will come with at least one design installed, and there are thousands more to choose from.

Themes control the colors, layout, and fonts of your site. They may also include some images – backgrounds, icons, etc.

Like WordPress itself, the themes are often provided freely (though some are offered as paid add-ons with customization and support). For our theme, we chose a free theme to start with the core code, then added a “child theme” to customize the design and other options.
